Questions

Which lamps work?

Colour lamps in Apple's Home app: IKEA (Thread or the TRÅDFRI hub), Philips Hue, Aqara, Nanoleaf and others. White lamps can be switched off during the party, or left as they are.

Does BeatLamp record what we say?

No. The iPhone listens for the beat as the music plays, and the sound is never recorded or saved. To recognise the song, Shazam receives a short audio fingerprint, not a recording.

Do I need Spotify or Apple Music?

No. BeatLamp listens to whatever plays in the room. If Sonos or the Music app is playing, it reads the song from there to keep the tempo steady.

Why do some lamps roll instead of changing on the beat?

Some lamps and hubs answer slowly. An IKEA TRÅDFRI hub takes about 200 ms, and Thread lamps sometimes stall for a couple of seconds. BeatLamp lets those lamps glide between colours so nothing blinks off the beat, and tries them on the beat again later.

Is it safe for people who are sensitive to flashing light?

Each lamp changes at most three times a second, and at most once a second when Dim Flashing Lights is on in iOS. Light modes never blink.

Do not use the music mode if someone in the room has photosensitive epilepsy.

Do I need the camera?

No, everything works without it. The camera can check how late each lamp shows its new colour, so the changes land right on the beat.

What happens to my lamps afterwards?

They go back to the colour, brightness and white setting they had before the party. If the app is closed in the middle of a party, it puts them back the next time you open it.

What does it cost?

BeatLamp is free with up to three lamps on the beat. Pro unlocks every lamp and costs the same as in the App Store in your country, yearly with a free trial, monthly or once for life.

Which iPhone do I need?

An iPhone with iOS 17 or later, and lamps set up in the Home app.
